Colias palaeno

Hostplant: Vaccinium uliginosum. Other Vaccinium spp. is mentioned at different places. I tried to feed the larva with V.myrtillus and V.vitis-idaea, but they did not accept this.

Lifecycle and behavior: The female easily laid eggs on the hostplant. As with other Pierids the eggs change color from yellow to orange/redish during development. The eggs used only 3-4 days to hatch! The larva normally hibernates as L3. However, two larva in my breeding went all the way to adults the same season, hatching in late August. The rest of the larva hibernated as L3. The larval stage lasted about 4 weeks and they molted 3 times. The pupal stage lasted 7-8 days. The adult butterfly has its main flight period in June and July, but can be found into August aswell, especially in the north.
